Montezuma Beach
on the Pacific Coast!

Montezuma is legendary,
among Surfers and Backpackers,
UFO Seekers, Hippie Expatriates and European
budget
travelers, many young people still like to camp on
the beach.
Many of the little hotels and
cabinas, have no swimming
pools and
not many have air conditioners. The
road and
the heat, separate the men from the
boys, as they would
say in this dimension.
By the time you
take the Ferry, from Puntarenas,
an
hour trip, after you have already
waited about 2
hours, to get your tickets, in a very
long line of
passengers and vehicles, clamoring to
get on the Ferry
to go to Montezuma, and arrive on
the other side,
and drive another hour, through mind
bending "heat"
you finally arrive
in Montezuma!
Be Forewarned, 1 mile into Montezuma, the road
turns
into a mountainous "sand trap",
and many cars cannot
make
it, to the top of the incline
and they have done
nothing
to
remedy this. (This was last year).

When you finally
get to Montezuma Beach, you are
struck with this "mind bending heat" like
a boulder, in
December and January, it is very
difficult to breathe
and move around in, yet
many of the hotels, are
on
steep inclines, that you must
hike up to, to reach your
room.
This is not a
beach, I would recommend for
older people on vacation, it's
very hard on your
health. Be constantly aware of "heat
stroke".
When you get ready to return home
and take the
Ferry Trip, back to Puntarenas,
especially, if you are
driving a car, make sure you arrive
at the Ferry Dock,
3 hours early,
or you will be forced to wait
4 more
hours, for the next Ferry.
Montezuma Beach is located
near the tip, of the Nicoya
Peninsula and has been a natural refuge, for surfing
enthusiasts and spiritually weary souls,
seeking a
unique communion with nature.

East of Montezuma,
the wide sandy beach of Playa Grande, is a
favorite spot for beach fans
and surfers. From there, you can walk
along 7 kilometers of
pristine coast, to get to the beautiful
Cocalitos
Waterfall, cascading straight down into a deep lava tide
pool, at
the edge of the ocean. The pool is a delightful mix of
fresh and saltwater and you can bathe, while gazing out over
the sea and rocky coastline.
The town, is at
the base of a steep line of
cliffs, a
few dozen buildings, nestled up against the
Pacific Ocean.
A string of long beaches,
stretches to the South, a
picturesque lava-rock coast, backed up
against thick
jungle, lies to the North.
The little beach town,
reminds you of the 60's.

There is also hiking, 1 mile
up a long, winding
river stream, to the famous Montezuma
Waterfalls,
beware
of "heat stroke".

A few miles away from
Montezuma, lies the Cabo
Blanco Reserve, home
to species found only in the dry
tropical forest.

Sweltering Hot Sun...
Although you can drive from Nicoya, we do not
recommend it. Catch the Tambor ferry at
Puntarenas.
