"Walking" Palms

There is a farm near the tropical wet forest
of the Caribbean slope,
close to the ocean,
with a high temperature and humid weather,
a tropical rainforest.
I
used to walk with my friend in the forest, between small,
shade loving
Bactris,
Chamadoreas
and
Geonomas, and the enormous
Socrateas and Iriarteas,
with their stilt roots that resembled
the "several legs" of a walking monster
palm tree.

And, you may see these walking
palms.
These trees have
roots, that begin about
chest high. These trees, actually
lean as
their roots grow, giving the impression, that
these mammoth trees, are walking on stilts.
The mysterious, but majestic presence, of the
Welfias, with
their rakis covered by fruits, made them look like the hair
of a
bronzy giant.

The rainforest is a secret cathedral... hiding
all sorts of
magical mysteries.
Many of these unusual human like palms, are no longer there.
They have died, due to
cutting down
of the rainforests.

Some of them were taken for their
hearts,
(palmito), a
delicacy in cuisine, and some of
them died because they
are
shade adapted and the
huge trees, that act as their "sunroof" were
logged, for their precious
wood, sending the shade loving palms to a slow death.

"Los Cerros de Escazu"
The girl in the Mountain...

|
South of San
José, in Costa Rica, lies a mountain range, called the "Cerros de Escazú".
These mountains are beautiful
and mysterious and
they hide a secret.
Carved out of a pasture, on the entire
side of the mountain, is a distinct figure, of a young girl.

Who is she? She is known as "La
Muchacha de
la Montaña". To see her, visit
La Sabana, which
is
a large
park and recreation area,
in the western sector
of San Jose. Look South, to a
high point, where you
will see a white cross, called "La
Cruz de Alajuelita".
To the right or West, you will see
another high point,
with a radio transmission tower.
Look directly down,
from this tower and you will see
an open pasture.
This open pasture
area, outlines the head of the girl,
with her
face turned skyward and
toward the
cross.
To the right of her head and down,
you will see
another clearing, which
forms her shoulder and upper arm.
Below her upper arm, a country road,
winds up
the mountainside, which
by a strange coincidence,
forms her outstretched forearm. The
road swerves
exactly where her wrist should be.
The photograph shown below, is a close-up
of the area. The photograph,
has not been retouched,
in any way.
It is exactly what the camera sees.
Is this the work of the hand of man,
artistic cows, or
a natural phenomenon?
Who if, anyone, is responsible,
for this intriguing figure? Does the terrain
of land,
have remembrances?
The mountains are also called "Cerros
de Muerte", the mountain of the
dead.

(Cerro) Its name
means "the powerful
spirit". It was originally given, by
the Cabecar Indian tribe. The shamans claim,
the peak brings
them powerful dreams, where they can
communicate with the
other worlds and receive profound
messages, for their people.
Literally, the name
means "the death
peak" and was given
by men, who were moving through the
mountain pass, in carretas, (wooden
carts), from San Isidro
to San Jose, going to the markets.

It occurred especially in the first
half of the 20th century, when there wasn’t
yet the Pan American Highway.
Tired travelers, often have fallen to sleep,
in very low temperatures and have
frozen to death.
